13 Reasons Why

Have you heard about the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why?" It is a series based on a fictional story about a teen who dies by suicide. The series is detailed and graphic and is not recommended for anyone under age 16. Because it is popular among middle and high school students, it is worth asking your student if they have seen the series or heard about it and then use the Guidance for Families provided by NASP to guide a conversation about the series as well as the serious topic of suicide. If your child has watched the series, we highly recommend that you watch it as well. If your child has seen it and you don't have the time or don't want to watch it, let the school counselors know and they would be happy to meet with your child. You can also go to the Counseling Center website for more information and resources on this topic, including a list of talking points specific to the series.
